Blue Mountain College

“Blue Mountain College” (originally called ‘Blue Mountain Female Institute’) was established in 1873. Blue Mountain College still exists today. We used to have our LOWREY FAMILY REUNIONS there. I visited there for one of these reunions in about 1980 when I was still a young man. As mentioned in Mark Perrin Lowrey’s story, three generations of Lowrey’s ended up as president of this college. Countless buildings on the college campus are named after some Lowrey or another. I have to admit that I felt some “family pride” after visiting this college. Of course if I hadn’t been so preoccupied with chasing the female students around the campus, I might have found out more…  It is a beautiful place and also the home of the “Lowrey Memorial Baptist Church”.

Yes, we are descended from a bunch of “Southern Baptists”! These are people known to be hardcore “Christians”. However I think that later generations of our family fell out of practice. I know for a fact that my daddy never took us to church!

The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) is a Christian denomination based in the United States. It is the world’s largest Baptist denomination and the largest Protestant body in the United States, with over 15 million members as of 2015. This also makes it the second largest Christian body in the United States, after the Catholic Church… (See Link to Southern Baptist Convention)

To understand all of the stereotypes and common beliefs about Southern Baptists, I think you need to be American…

Blue Mountain College finally decided to let men attend in 2005… If you want to read more, go to the link of Blue Mountain College…
